We investigate the impacts of oceanographic variability on coastal marine ecosystems and human communities of the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico, and the influences of local and global feed backs on the resilience and adaptive capacity of these systems. Our research has shown that protection in marine reserves can maintain the recovery potential of exploited populations impacted by hypoxia and warming, and can buffer these populations against over harvesting.
