Elizabeth (Betsy) Mansfield

Graduate Student

I’m a PhD candidate in the Micheli Lab researching the effects of climate change and fishing on social-ecological systems along the Pacific coast of Baja California. My work focuses on the resilience of different subsystems of social-ecological systems to understand how climate change and fishing practices interact and affect resilience. I utilize field observations, lab experiments, modeling, and semi-structured interviews to address a range of questions. This work aims to inform decision-making and management in small-scale fisheries under future climate conditions, as well as provide insight as to effective communication on climate change to communities feeling its impact. Outside of research I am passionate about science communication and engagement with the public and, I volunteer with several organizations to teach people about marine science and the oceans.
