We are studying the community-wide effects of ocean acidification using carbon dioxide vents from Ischia, Italy, as natural laboratories. This work, conducted in collaboration with former lab member Kristy Kroeker, and Drs Maria Cristina Gambi and Nuria Teixido of the Naples Zoological Station, have produced insights on how the diversity and function of coastal marine ecosystems will be affected by future acidification. The team is also collaborating with Dr Jeremy Bailenson and Cody Karutz (http://vhil.stanford.edu/) to use virtual reality for public education. Two VR exhibits on ocean acidification, the 360 spherical video “The Crystal Reef” and the virtual field trip “The Crystal Reef: Interactive” were premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.
